How Much Does Shopify Take Per Sale?|How to Add Products to Shopify

If you use Shopify, you may have noticed that the platform takes a cut of your earnings. Learn how much Shopify takes and what you can do to reduce fees.

Shopify takes a percentage out of each sale made on their platform. How much they take per sale depends on the plan you’re using, as well as the payment platform used for transactions.Shopify’s pricing plans include:

  • Basic Shopify Plan: This plan charges a credit card rate of 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction if you use Shopify Payments (Shopify’s built-in payment platform). If you use an external payment platform, there is an additional fee of 2% per transaction.
  • Shopify Plan: This plan reduces the transaction fee to 2.6% + 30¢ per transaction, with an extra 1% fee when using external payment platforms.
  • Advanced Shopify Plan: This plan has a slightly lower credit card rate of 2.4% + 30¢ per transaction if you used Shopify Payments. If you use an external payment platform, the fee is reduced to 0.5% per transaction.

Can You Remove Shopify Transaction Fees?

Shopify transaction fees are part of their pricing structure. You cannot completely remove these fees because they are how Shopify generates revenue for providing their services. However, there are a few ways you can minimize transaction fees:

  • Use Shopify Payments: If you’re in a region where Shopify Payments is available, using it as your primary payment platform can help you reduce transaction fees compared to using external platforms.
  • Choose a Higher Plan: Shopify’s higher-tier plans, such as the Advanced Shopify Plan, come with lower transaction fees compared to the basic plans.
  • Negotiate with Shopify: In some cases, if you are a high-volume merchant, you might be able to negotiate custom pricing or fee reductions with Shopify.
  • Factor Fees into Pricing: When setting your product prices, consider including the transaction fees so that they don’t eat into your profit margin significantly.
